Homocysteine is produced naturally by the human body as a side effect of natural functions like digestion.  When your body digests animal protein, homocysteine is created.  The higher your diet is in animal protein, the higher your homocysteine levels.  In fact, homocysteine  may be responsible for more heart attacks than low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Fortunately, adequate B-vitamin supplementation has been shown to safely lower homocysteine levels, and thus lower heart attack risk.

British researchers with the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Aging (OPTIMA) have discovered another exciting benefit of B-vitamin supplementation- it lowers the homocysteine levels in the brain, and thus reduces brain shrinkage and slows brain aging. This is incredible news for people in the early stages of dementia, as well as being a key to preventing or delaying the onset of dementia.
